Materials for the Changing Seasons

As the leaves begin to turn and the days grow a little shorter, autumn naturally invites us to bring more warmth, texture, and character into the spaces we inhabit. It is a season that reminds us that the most memorable interiors are often created through thoughtful layers—the subtle variation of a handcrafted tile, the richness of natural stone, or the tactile quality of beautifully made hardware. This October, Earth Elements is exploring three suppliers whose work brings those qualities to life: McIntyre Tile, Kreoo, and Ashley Norton. Together, they offer a refined mix of artistry, natural materials, and enduring craftsmanship that feels particularly fitting as we settle into the warmth and comfort of the season.

Few materials capture the character of a home quite like handcrafted tile, and McIntyre Tile has been creating distinctive ceramic surfaces since 1972. Founded in Healdsburg, California, by a group of ceramicists inspired by the beauty of artisanal pottery and the surrounding landscape, McIntyre quickly became known for tiles with warm, earthy colors and an unmistakably handcrafted quality. Over the decades, the company expanded its repertoire to include porcelain, decorative tile, mosaics, specialty shapes, trims, and pool and spa applications. Today, McIntyre continues to make its tiles to order, combining traditional artistry with a remarkably broad palette of colors, textures, shapes, and finishes. Its Artisan Collection is particularly well suited to an autumn-inspired palette, with layered glazes, tonal variation, fine crazing, and colors ranging from warm neutrals and browns to deep greens, reds, and blues. McIntyre's current Essential 100 collection also provides a curated selection of its most popular colors in numerous shapes and sizes. An interesting evolution in the brand's current offering is its treatment of the Archive Collection: former archive colors are no longer part of the standard collection, but McIntyre can use its Custom Solutions program to help recreate an archival color, match an existing installation, or develop a new interpretation.

For a material that feels both grounded and luxurious, natural stone has few rivals. Italian brand Kreoo has made marble the centerpiece of its design philosophy since its founding in 2010, growing from the expertise of Decormarmi, an established name in the Italian marble industry. The brand works closely with designers and architects to select marble according to each project's aesthetic and technical requirements, transforming individual blocks of stone into architectural bathroom pieces and furnishings. For Earth Elements, Kreoo is especially compelling in the world of plumbing, where its collection includes sculptural sinks and freestanding bathtubs that treat the bathroom as more than a purely functional space. Its offerings range from organically shaped washbasins to highly geometric designs, with extensive marble options that allow the natural veining and variation of each stone to become part of the design. Among Kreoo's newer offerings are Musina and Posso, designed by Luca Nichetto and inspired by the historic Venetian vera da pozzo, or stone wells. Each is carved from a single block of marble, translating the history and solidity of Venetian architecture into contemporary countertop washbasins. Other current designs, such as the Dame and Dawn freestanding collections, demonstrate Kreoo's continued exploration of hand-sculpted surfaces, contrasting marbles, and three-dimensional stonework.

As autumn brings attention to the details of the home, hardware is an especially fitting place to look for warmth and character. Ashley Norton's story began in 1987, when the company set out to address installation challenges associated with the premium hardware available at the time. Drawing on modern European engineering, Ashley Norton developed architectural hardware designed to combine sophisticated aesthetics with comfortable operation and straightforward installation. Today, its collections encompass solid bronze and solid brass door hardware, cabinet hardware, multipoint sets, accessories, and a wide range of finishes. The brand's solid bronze pieces are sand-cast from art-grade bronze and finished with hand-applied patinas, while its solid brass collections are hot forged for crisp definition and durability. There is also plenty happening within the current collection: Ashley Norton has introduced a Natural Bronze patina across an extensive selection of designer door, cabinet, and home accessories, along with newer pieces such as the Brass Alston T-Knob, Adria appliance pull, and a new Solid Brass Bath Accessory Collection. These additions continue the company's approach of treating hardware as an architectural element rather than simply a finishing touch—something that can quietly add depth, warmth, and personality to an entire room.

Autumn has a way of making us appreciate the details—the changing colors outside, the texture of natural materials, and the warmth created when individual elements come together. The same philosophy applies beautifully to interior design. A handcrafted tile can introduce movement and color, a sculpted marble sink or tub can become a focal point, and thoughtfully selected hardware can provide the finishing layer that ties everything together.
